Become an FYE PEER Leader

What will I do as a Peer Leader?
A First Year Experience (FYE) Peer Leader is a full-time, undergraduate student at Florida State University. Peer Leaders serve as mentors, role models and resource guides to first-time in college students who are striving to make a smooth transition from high school to college. Peer Leaders help develop syllabi, lead course discussion and participate in classroom activities that cover academic success, health issues, values, culture, leadership, and campus resources. He/She is a part of an instructional team paired up with a full-time employee at FSU. Each Peer Leader will be assigned to a FYE class held in either the Summer C or Fall semester. Peer Leaders will serve as a mentor and role model for appropriate academic, university involvement, and leadership opportunities to help students adjust to the University and become academically successful.

Peer Leaders should expect to work between 4-6 hours each week while their FYE class is in session.
Peer Leaders are expected to participate in a Leadership Course and attend various other training sessions throughout the Spring 2009 semester.

What does a Peer Leader Receive?

A semester stipend of $250.
Experience in leadership, facilitating discussions, and planning a successful learning environment for first-year students.
Enhanced knowledge of group dynamics and innovative interpersonal communication skills.
Possibility of written reference for future job application and enhancement of resume.
Satisfaction in assisting Florida State first-year students.
Networking opportunities with FSU faculty, staff, and other student leaders.

What are the Required Qualifications?

All Peer Leaders must have completed at least 12 credits at Florida State University at the completion of Fall semester, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better by end of Fall 2008 & maintain that GPA throughout their participation as a Peer Leader.
Selected Peer Leaders cannot graduate prior to December following the semester they serve as a Peer Leader.
Be in good academic and judicial standing with the University.
Have an interest in helping fellow students become successful at Florida State University.
Sensitivity to and interest in issues of diversity and community service.
Willingness and ability to mentor new students and model appropriate behavior.
Enthusiasm for the university, its students, staff, faculty, and university life.

Who is our Ideal Peer Leader?

Someone who:

Is a good role model & an active and involved student – both inside and outside the classroom.
Is comfortable leading group discussions and working closely with first year students.
Has strong interpersonal communication skills.
Has a desire to be a contributing member to an Instructional Team.

How do I Apply?

Complete an application either via hard copy or online during the month of October, 2008.
For new applicants: provide 2 references from faculty, staff and/or employers on the attached forms.
Attend a group interview (TBA).
